Church and State in Colonial & Revolutionary Virginia
Established by law and supported by taxation, the Church of England was the official religion of colonial Virginia. Church life revolved around the parish, a geographical area that supported a minister and functioned as a unit of local government. Over the eighteenth century, Presbyterians, Baptists and other dissenters challenged the Church of England’s authority and traditional role in Virginia society. In the Revolutionary period, Virginians brought forth religious liberty with landmark legislation that shaped the new nation in profound ways. This course examines how Virginia moved from a royal colony with few dissenters and a well-established Church of England to an independent commonwealth that declared religious freedom to be a natural right of mankind.

Robert Teagle is the Director of Programs & Communications at the Foundation for Historic Christ Church in Weems, Virginia, where he has worked since 2000. He earned his B.A. in History from the College of William and Mary and M.A. in American History from Virginia Tech. His research interests include the architectural history of early Virginia, the role of the Church of England and the rise of religious liberty in colonial Virginia, the Carter family, slavery and emancipation, and the history of Christ Church Parish.

May 26, June 2 and June 9 – 10:00 a.m. in Bayne Center at Historic Christ Church

Hornets, Snakes, Baptists & Presbyterians: Winning the Contest for Religious Freedom
Monticello historian John Ragosta traces the relatively unknown role of Virginia’s religious dissenters, primarily Baptist and Presbyterian evangelicals, in both winning the American Revolution and in establishing religious liberty, creating the strict separation of church and state embodied in Thomas Jefferson’s eloquent “Statute for Establishing Religious Freedom.”

RAL Art Center - The 14th Annual Great Art Heist
RAL Art Center is excited to announce The Great Art Heist, its largest, most exciting and highly anticipated event, now celebrating 14 years!  After a year off due to COVID, the Heist will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021 in one form or another.  If able, our reception will begin at 4:00 pm with drinks and hors d’oeuvres followed by the main event at 5:00 pm.

How does The Great Art Heist work?  Tickets are purchased for a fine art raffle.  The night of the event tickets will be drawn at random.  As each ticket is drawn, the ticket-holder gets his/her pick of any donated, original work of art.  The next ticket drawn gets his/her choice of the remaining art and so on and so forth.  Ticket holders can preview all works of art at RAL from June 3 thru June 26.  The number of tickets sold corresponds to the number of art originals donated.  EVERY ticket holder is guaranteed to go home with something special!  Member tickets for The Great Art Heist will sell for $100 with non-member tickets selling for $125 and can be purchased at the RAL Art Center.

New in 2021, you can buy your Heist ticket as an Early Bird from April 1 thru May 6.  By doing so, you will automatically be entered into our first ever Early Bird Raffle.  The winning ticket number will be drawn the night of The Heist.  For the lucky winner, you will walk away that evening with two great items: your raffle prize AND your original work of art.

The 2021 Heist will continue to have its fun and competitive silent auction.

Also new for 2021 will be a Summer Art Camp sponsorship program.  Individuals and businesses who choose to sponsor an at-risk or underprivileged child will give that child the opportunity to participate in one week of our popular Summer Art Camps at NO CHARGE.  Every $85 donated will sponsor one child for an entire week of camp.  Please give generously.  All sponsors will be listed, with their permission, in The Great Art Heist program.

If you are interested in being a sponsor, donating items to the Silent Auction, or volunteering to support this great cause please contact Christine Mason at events@ralartcenter.com or by calling her directly at 804-577-7757.

We look forward to seeing you at the 14th Annual Great Art Heist a fun and exciting community event!

Russian String Orchestra presented by Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts
Founded in 1991 the Russian String Orchestra, comprised of some of Russia's finest young string players, has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky. Whether it is the highly-acclaimed CDs or its mesmerizing concerts, Chamber Orchestra Kremlin's warmth and high energy create addictive performances that stay with listeners long after the last note has been played.

About half of nearly 2,000 concerts the orchestra has performed to date have taken place in Moscow, the rest were played on tours in 25 countries in North and South America, Europe and the Far East. The orchestra's discography of over 30 CDs has received widespread international acclaim, such as the Diapason d'Or award in France, Critics Choice in London's Gramophone, Critics Choice in The New York Times, and Record of the Year award in Hong Kong.

The signature quality of the orchestra is the depth and variety of its repertoire -- over 1000 compositions from early baroque to works written on commission from Misha Rachlevsky and the orchestra by composers from Russia, Europe and the USA. The orchestra prides itself in offering interesting and often unique programs, not only for its home audience, but on tour as well.

The Church of England in Early Virginia: The Essentials
Historian Ed Bond investigates the Church of England, which arrived with the first colonists who settled Virginia. As it struggled to gain a solid footing and transfer its administrative structure to North America, the church became dominated by the laity but for many years continued to carry out numerous secular duties just as the Church of England did in England.
